Second team stung by Bees

Tavistock II 150 all out Dartington & Totnes II 100 all out

Tavistock (18 points) beat D&T (7 points) by 50 runs.

Shortage of players had resulted in the second eleven losing several players to the first team and once again the seconds were short of recognised batsmen, which cost them the match.

The morning rain had cleared up leaving a muggy atmosphere and upon winning the toss D&T skipper Gavin Colegate had no hesitation in asking Tavistock to bat.  It proved to be the right decision as Tavvy were reduced to 6 for 2 after just two overs and D&T were cock-a-hoop.

Nikheel  Jina bowled a remarkable first over.  His first delivery swung wide.  However, his second ball lifted sharply and proved to be too good for Webber , who had scored 157 the previous week.  Webber gloved the ball to keeper Jon Perkin, himself an ex-Tavistock player, as well as a recent star on the BBC ‘Countryfile’ programme.  Jina struggled to control the swing and sent down a further four wides before his over was completed.

Steve Mudge then struck in his first over when Howgill edged him to Jina at gully.   Tavvy opener Phil Bees is a seasoned campaigner and his batting eventually proved to be the difference between the teams.  However, he was lucky to survive an lbw shout against an inspired Mudge and he then edged the next delivery straight to gully, but the chance wasn’t held.

Bees and McGahe grafted and consolidated the innings.  Glenn Colegate and Mick Rusling relieved the opening bowlers.   Rusling struck in his second over when McGahe(16)  hit a big shot off a long hop.  The ball appeared to be have cleared Mike Jarvis at long on but Jarvis leapt like a salmon to take a brilliant one-handed catch above his head. It was a stunning piece of athleticism and the game’s ‘champagne moment’.   Tavvy were reduced to 70 for 4 when Rusling (2 for 20) bowled their skipper, Andy Gauler for 12.  Gauler clearly displayed his annoyance at playing the ball onto his stumps by petulantly throwing his bat.  Bees survived another strong lbw appeal but after Tyler Walton bowled Anderson for a duck he found a willing partner in Mark Hopkins and the pair took the score to 126 with some lusty hitting from Hopkins, who made 30.

Hopkins launched Steve Breed to the deep mid-wicket boundary but Jarvis was waiting and judged the trajectory perfectly to take another fine catch.  Tavvy had a young and inexperienced tail and Bees recognised he had to score the runs but perished when Jina returned to the attack.  Bees, on 64, belted the ball to long off where Jarvis completed his hat trick of catches.  Jina, 3 for 21, and Breed, 3 for 29, polished off the rest.

D&T opened the batting with Jon Perkin, playing only his second match of the season, and Gavin Colegate and both seemed comfortable until Jon  was caught and bowled by Bellamy for 6.  Glenn  joined his brother and also seemed comfortable but was bowled by Gauler for 5 with the score now on 55- aided by numerous wides.  Nikheel  came in and looked in good touch striking several lusty blows on the leg side.  Gavin  was batting well and holding the innings together.  The pair looked they might win the game for D&T until Nikheel, on 15, misshit a delivery from Hopkins which went skywards and the keeper took a simple catch.  This dismissal heralded a remarkable batting collapse as D&T went from 77 for 2 to 79 for 7 in the space of 2 overs.  Hopkins completed his hat trick dismissing Gavin (28) and Jarvs with his next two deliveries.  Bees then bowled Tyler and Hopkins (4 for 10) made it 4 wickets in 4 balls when the first ball of his next over, bowled Steve Mudge.   Darren  and  Mick  put up some resistance before they also succumbed leaving D&T well short.
